#READPower is one of the programmes developed by Educubed Foundation in partnership with Asani Energy (an energy solutions company) to LIGHT the way to national LITERACY by distributing solar lighting systems to impoverished communities. Statistics show that 78% of Grade 4 pupils in South Africa cannot read for basic meaning, that means that eight of ten 10-year old’s, in South Africa, are functionally illiterate.
The #READPower Programme also incorporates unemployed youth, with a focus on women, living in the community by training them to install and maintain the lighting solutions and creating an opportunity for them to participate in the energy sector.
The lack of access to electricity also creates far reaching socio-economic development challenges. The inability to read and learn directly impacts a child’s ability to improve their circumstances therefore continuing the cycle of poverty.
#READPower drives meaningful Socio-Economic Development and is aligned with 7 of Sustainable Development Goals:
- No poverty
- Quality Education
- Gender Equity
- Affordable and Clean Energy
- Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Reduce Inequalities
- Climate Change
The #READPower Programme is an ideal partnership opportunity for both individuals and corporates in order to make a positive impact in improving the national literacy rate and addressing the youth unemployment rate in the country.
